Go the Distance…and Beyond

Though today’s title sounds like a line from one of my husband’s favorite movies, “Field of Dreams”, I am not talking about baseball or a dream. I am referring to making the decision to go beyond the demands when someone compels you to do something.

Most people get stuck on the word compel when reading this verse. According to the Oxford Dictionary, compel is defined as “to force (or oblige) someone to do something.” By definition you are NOT given a choice in the matter; it’s a must-do thing when you are compelled. Therefore, we are forced or expected to do it. We may feel we have no control in what we are required to do, remember the attitude we choose to approach the required work with is ALL OUR CHOICE.

Today’s verse is telling us that we should go beyond the minimum; we should commit to doing more than required, more than whatever is being forced on us to do. Whatever someone is compelling us to do, we should choose to do it double-fold. Wait, why? Because there is more to be done…by each one of us! We have a choice to do more than what is required!

I encourage you to read beyond Matthew 5:41. Maybe today’s writing will lead you to compel yourself to search beyond what I shared, to delve double-fold into God’s Word.

Go the distance and seek out that second mile. Enjoy your journey with God’s Word!
