Guide on the Side

Does decision-making become easier as we grow older and wiser? Are we more at ease with the outcome or more trusting of our choices? Do we find ourselves thinking about what might happen…or are we trusting God’s plan no matter what happens? Do we live in fear or in anticipation?

Today, I thought about how difficult it must be to be a teenager in today’s world. Things are more high-stakes in our world and our youth have less earthly support when making decisions. We have lots of people examining what teenagers do wrong, yet many of those same people aren’t modeling to show our youth what it means to do something right! We need to guide them through life choices and not direct them. But what exactly does that mean?

Guiding others means to provide insight into choices, with possible solutions and possible setbacks; having others think about the pros and cons for their choices based on Biblical principles.

  • It means sharing a variety of ideas without telling someone exactly what to do.
  • It means mentoring and encouraging others to think with perspective.
  • It means giving opportunities for questions to be asked without personal judgment.
  • It means being a support system for others as they find their purpose and way in life.
  • It means guiding them based on Christian choices, not our own ideals!
  • It means guiding others to not be anxious and worry, but rather to pray and request help from God. (Philippians 4:6)

Wow! That was not easy for me to write! I realize I need to do a better job of guiding others. I like to direct people based on what I believe is right. However, God is the one who says we shall lay our own paths and He will direct our steps. (Proverbs 16:9) I need to fulfill my calling as a guide on the side; I am not to take God’s place.

Life experiences are important steps for each Christian to build faith and trust with God! I encourage you to find at least one way to be that important guide for someone you meet today. God bless!
