To Serve or to Worship?

Finding balance in life is not easy! We struggle to find balance between work and play, career and family, marriage and children, service and worship!

I’ve willingly worked 60+ hours a week, happily pursued and attained advanced degrees, earned accolades and titles, served others with joy, worked multiple jobs at one time, skipped sleep to gain time to do even more service-oriented things, juggled career and family roles, but I learned that without balance, everyone, including myself, falls down. In God’s love for us, He helps us back up, but we often don’t acknowledge Him and we go right back to what we were doing. We don’t recognize the need for balance! We focus right back on end goals, deadlines, and anxiety looming ahead of us.

It doesn’t matter if we are serving others (even if it is God’s purpose), an unbalanced life will lead us to fall. Things you love to do may even be taken away from you.

In my Bible reading today, Martha asked Jesus to correct Mary because she chose to stop serving others to listen to Him. Martha was upset and confused (as was I), as she was always overwhelmed with things to do and places to go, when in reality, she needed to stop serving and start worshipping.

I continue to struggle to allow time to be with Jesus, to study and listen to the Word, and to worship Him! All of the other things can be easily taken away; they are not the good part He shares in this story.

“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her,Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.””

Though I have heard these words many times, I realize today that:

*Quality is better than Quantity

* Time is more valuable than money!

* Take Care of Your Health!

* To worship God is better than serving others! He will help you find the balance to do both; but you must make worshipping Him #1.

*Serving others should not take away from time spent with God!

*Study God’s Word each day!
