‘Why me?’ I asked God…again!

I am not sure if you have ever uttered those words, but I must admit I have…not just once or twice, but many times. More times than I ever should have!

You see, I always ask ‘why me?’ when things are not going well; when I feel defeated or cheated. I realize now I have always made those words have a negative meaning, when things seem nearly impossible or unfair; one of anger and resentment. I am not proud to say it, but it is true. Instead, what if I asked ‘why me?’ with appreciation and astonishment. As if each event has possibility and purpose beyond the moment. One which requires patience to unveil its true meaning or blessing.

I recently had to take a medical leave from my job due to illness. This job is one that most everyone would find to be a “dream job”, with numerous benefits that many never will find in their lives. I approached this leave first with my traditional ‘why me?’ mantra of anger, confusion, and lack of control. It has taken me almost two months, but yesterday, I found myself having gratitude for the opportunity to heal and find a greater purpose in life.

Our perspective and attitude about each event in our lives makes the biggest difference. I am great at telling others those exact ideals, but I am a hypocrite if I don’t start following them.

What is your perspective on the circumstances that surround your life? How do you ask the question ‘why me?’ when things happen to you? Keep in mind the power of gratitude with your attitude! I will, too!
